NEVER ones to sit still for long, the Bli Bli branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Association are gearing up for a holiday season based on giving.

Under their motto of “giving in kind”, a dozen determined ladies have been assembling hampers of toiletries, non-perishable foods, children’s toys and other Christmas necessities for homeless and women’s shelters in the area.

They’ve also been packaging sewing kits for women in Papua New Guinea in second-hand glasses cases, and are planning to host a garage sale on December 3 to raise funds for the year ahead.
Branch secretary Judy Dalgleish said their focus over the coming festive season was the act of giving.

“I think it’s giving that holds the community together,” she said.

“That’s what makes us a community and makes us people.”

Long-time member Esme also said the holidays were often a time of loneliness for many people, but it didn’t have to be that way.

“There’s no need to be lonely when we have groups such as the QCWA,” she said.

“We reckon we’re pretty strong women, but your preparations [for the likelihood of tragedy] are never enough.

“There’s always somebody who’s there to listen to you.”

Plenty is promised to be on offer at the garage sale, which will be held at 2/1 Cottonwood St, Mudjimba from 7am until noon.

Ms Dalgleish said funds raised will be contributed to the group’s kitty for “whenever we hear of someone doing it tough” in 2017.
