The International Year of Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of all living things; the different plants, animals and micro-organisms, the genetic information they contain and the ecosystems they form.
Biodiversity is usually explored at three levels – genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity. These three systems work together to create the complexity of life on Earth.

PHOTOGRAPHY CONDITIONS OF ENTRY – “The Rules”

1. The contest is open to amateur photographers who are QCWA members and non-QCWA permanent QLD residents.
2. Images must be the original work of the entrant within the past 2 years and not have been place getters in QCWA competition.
3. Built-in controls, such as Contrast, Levels, Saturation and Sharpness in digital cameras may be used for whole of digital image adjustment. Cropping allows more of the frame to be filled with the subject and can remove unwanted elements in the foreground and background, like clutter and bright spots.
4. Photos must be rectangular in shape up to a maximum size of 17.8cm x 12.7cm (7” x 5”). Experience continues to suggest that most photo entries will fall into one or the other of the 6” x 4” and 7” x 5” print sizes readily available.
5. Each photo entry must be individually and centrally mounted (“portrait” or “landscape”) on a black cardboard backing, 22cm x 17cm, using glue, “Jac” paper or double-sided tape. Relatively inexpensive double-sided tape works reasonably well, glue seems not so good. Corner slots are not permitted. The judges carefully check all requirements.
6. The Entrant’s name, address, category (including subsection if applicable) and a brief description of the photo, together with the names of their or the nearest QCWA  Branch and Division, must be clearly written on a separate card or paper, glued or taped to the back of the entry. QCWA members must lodge entries with one branch only.
7. Bantex Hook Dots (like Velcro) on the back of entries are not mandatory, but have proven to make display easier.
8. Entry cost is $0.50 per photo. A maximum of 3 photos per category is permitted. Branches must send entry fees and donations to the Division Treasurer and winning entries to the Division Photography Convener. The Division Treasurer should then send entry fees and donations to QCWA State Office Photography Contest. The Division should also send details (entrant name, branch, category & description of photo, a breakdown of entry fees and donations received) to the State Photography Convenor for her records.
9. Judges’ decisions are final. For return of entries please include self-addressed, postage paid packaging and/or other instructions.
10. All photographic images of a child (or children) must be accompanied by signed, written permission from the child's (or children's) parent or guardian, allowing display

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR THE 2010 QCWA STATE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST
The Conditions of Entry (“The Rules”) are clear but further explanation may help in a few areas:
Rule 5.  The requirement for a photo to be mounted on black cardboard 22cm by 17cm was well received in 2009. It is easy to do; one need only accurately measure and cut out a 22cm x 17cm cardboard rectangle and mount a single photo centrally on the card, “portrait” or “landscape” as appropriate.
Rule 6.  Identification details on the back of entries are important to confirm that QCWA members submit entries via one branch only, and that non-QCWA entrants submit entries via their nearest QCWA branch so that entries can find their way home to their owners.
Rule 8.  Entry & donation monies received by Branch Photography Convenors should be sent to Division; Division should then draw a cheque payable to QCWA State Photography Contest and send it to:
QCWA State Office
1st Floor, Ruth Fairfax House
89-95 Gregory Terrace
BRISBANE QLD 4000
