Country Woman of the Year Award

The Country Woman of the Year Award (CWOY) is not a Quest as most people understand a Quest to be. Judging of the event at Division and Region Level and at the State Final involves an interview with a panel of three juges. Each entrant is asked the same set of questions. These test their knowledge of QCWA and ACWW as well as General Knowledge and Current affairs. A couple of scenarios are posed which require mainly common sense, but show the judges that the entrant can think logically and talk fluently. Involvement in QCWA and the community, and general interest and achievements are on the entry form and all these aspects are considered. A small percentage of the total mark is allocated to general presentation and dress sense. Personality may be a major factor in this section.

All the entrants are wonderful members with a huge range of talents and involvements, but of course each year there can only be one winner. Looking at the list of past winners and placegetters, several ladies have later become a State Officer or even State President. It is certainly a great confidence booster to even be a State Finalist, and is certainly good fun and a very worthwhile experience.

Country Woman of the Year 2009

The Queensland Country Woman of the Year 2009 is Mrs. Cathy Pfeffer. Cathy is proud to be a member of Abergowrie/Long Pocket Branch in Northern Division.

Cathy joined Abergowrie/Long Pocket Branch in 2000 and has held various positions in the Branch, including Branch Executive, since that time.

Cathy is also a Handcraft Teacher and has been Division Hand Craft Chairman and Vice Chairman. She is active in Division activities and a presence on Division Committees.

Mrs. Pfeffer enjoys a little fishing if there is time off, travelling and reading. Cathy and her husband hope to become ‘grey nomads’ in the future and it is her hope that wherever they travel she is able to continue teaching crafts to people she meets... it’s her passion after all.

Cathy is a proud mum of 6 kids. After surviving that many teenage years she returned to her local High School and attained a Senior Certificate. In 1996 Cathy graduated from Griffith University where she completed a Bachelor of Commerce.

In January 2009 Cathy became an Australian Citizen, which she says

“was very special as I now have a Country to belong to.”
